Building Resilience on the Field: Mental Performance Coaching in Youth Sport

Recently, I worked with a middle school boys’ soccer team that reminded me exactly why I do this work. They had talent and drive—but also the emotional ups and downs that come with growing up in competitive sport.

At the start, frustration ruled the field. Missed passes turned into arguments. Heads dropped after opponent goals. You could feel the tension in the air. Instead of telling them to “calm down,” I stepped in as a guide—not a lifeguard. We didn’t wait for things to go wrong. We built tools to handle them when they did.

We practiced breathing before corner kicks, created quick reset routines after mistakes, and talked about what “composure under pressure” actually looks like. Slowly, the team’s language began to change. Players started calling out reminders like “Reset!” or “Next play!” instead of blaming or shutting down.

By the end of the season, these same athletes were leading each other—celebrating small wins, moving on from setbacks, and finishing matches with grit and grace. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence, trust, and ownership.

That’s what mental performance coaching looks like in action: all-in, but not all at once. It’s showing up, modeling what it means to reset, and helping us find our own way back to focus with confidence—again and again.
